Is pain relief/management something you're on the hunt for?!?!?! Yoga Therapy.......

Good morning Comox Valley.  My name is Julie Cook.  I'm a C-IAYT Yoga Therapist that just relocated.  My new home is The House of Now.  Thanks Arrow........ BIG shout out to her wonderful space and group, where I will be hosting group classes to support building and collaborating on a wonderful community of humans who are searching for pain relief/management.

Myself, I have lived experience with major injuries and sports injuries over my lifetime and had to learn to manage disease, condition, symptoms and pain.  Yoga Therapy as a modality is about to revolutionize rehabilitation as we help fill one of the gaps in healthcare as Occupational Therapists did 30+ years ago. This is all very exciting news for us as therapists and clients who have felt this gap in healthcare.  I know I sure have felt it.

There's such an abundance of information out there about Yoga Therapy as a form of health care but it is still making it's way into the awareness of the general public in North America.  One of the major reasons this sets us apart from what you may be familiar with in a yoga class is the object of the movement is not a shape.  Asana is a shape.  That part is irrelevant for the majority of what we do.  We primarily work with your central nervous system down regulation and the awareness of how you feel within your body in space(interoception) and knowing where you are in space (proprioception) and whether there are compensatory patterns (coping mechanisms to compensate for the inequity or imbalances within that may cause the dis-ease/disease).

There is a connection to sensory that is heavily bombarded ongoing with busy tasks in our day.  This raises sensation into your level of awareness for the early nervous system communication to support preventing disease or to slow down or lessen the impact of the inequity or disease.  We do use props and supports.  We do use RRSM(Rest & Relaxation Sleep Meditation)Yoga Nidra.  Ambiance and spacial setting gives you safety within to feel and find ease within your stillness and your movement.  Learning to move within your range with ease to allow down regulation.

As Yoga Therapists, our current governing body (IAYT-International Association of Yoga Therapists) is working diligently on having us licensed through the 2025 year to support the gap in heatlhcare all across North America.  This will significantly impact the healthcare system relieving pressure to General Practitioners(GPs-The family MDs).  This opens up a door for those with need for care through ICBC, Worksafe and private insurance through employment or not.  Our profession will be held to a standard of care and scope of practice as an RN, OT, PT etc....   I am truly honoured and excited for this.  (It's been a 30+ year wait for me.... WHOO HOO!)

Check out the site, it's pretty exciting.  www.iayt.org/page/AboutLanding
